Whether you're looking for STEM-filled reads featuring freaky bugs or field guides on how to catch paranormal creatures, you're in luck; Ali has the perfect book for you. Want to know more about Ali and Black Rabbit Books, PLUS want a chance to win an amazing treat? Read on...

Q: Hi, Ali! Thanks for joining us and Trick-or-Treating with #SeasonsOfKidLit! We’re thrilled to have Black Rabbit Books back this year and hear about some of the newly published paranormal and fright-filled titles you have.

Readers, if you missed BRB on the blog last year, click here to check out all the amazing books they shared with us. You definitely won't want to miss them. They are seriously one my favorite publishers, not to mention produce some of the coolest books out there!

We happened to notice you have a really fun and spooky new series on your list that’s right up our alley, Ali. Can you share more about yourself and about your new Paranormal Field Guides series with us? These titles look like SO much fun!

A: Thanks for having us! We are thrilled to be back on the blog this year to share more of our awesome books!

I am the Marketing Coordinator for Black Rabbit, The Creative Company (our distributor), and Amicus (sister company). I get to work on all things marketing from catalogs, to eBlasts, to social media, and everything in between. And of course get to see the incredible books come to life!

Our new Paranormal Field Guides series is so much fun! This is a new series in our Hi Jinx imprint. If you’re not familiar with Hi Jinx, these books are funny and mischievous and perfect for your pranksters, do-it-yourselfers, and any child who doesn’t think they like to read. Paranormal Field Guides captivates the imaginations of beginning and reluctant readers with conversational, goofy guides that illustrate how to search for mythical creatures.

Q: How many creatures do the Paranormal Field Guides feature, and what kind of tips and information do they share with the readers on locating them?

A: There are 6 creatures featured in this new series: Bigfoot, Ghosts, Dragons, Sea Monsters, Unicorns, and Werewolves. I think I have to say How to Find Unicorns is my favorite, because who doesn’t love unicorns?!

Included in each book are fun facts, maps, critical thinking questions, and of course tips on how to find the creature. Readers learn where the creature can most often be found and include tips on tracking the creature. For example, dragons most often live in mountains and it’s best to keep your eyes on the sky if you’re tracking one. Readers also learn about the creature’s characteristics, behaviors, and diet. Each book ends with a “Get in on the Hi Jinx” chapter which gives suggestions for how to search for them in your own life or learn more about them.

These books are great for critical thinking and debate topics, fans of paranormal TV shows, and for struggling or reluctant readers needing engaging nonfiction.

Readers, make sure to check out this slideshow below featuring spreads from this series!

Q: Another freaky but fun series BRB published is Dangerous Bugs. EEK! The pictures on the front will definitely give readers (or blog hosts like me ;) ) goosebumps.

Can you share more about this frightening series and all the bugs featured? What will readers see and learn when they’re flipping through the pages of these books?

A: If you’re a bug or insect fanatic, this series is for you. Up-close images will have you squirming!

Dangerous Bugs is a new series in our Bolt! imprint so readers will find the same elements as their other favorite Bolt titles: infographics, in-your-face photos, and expertly leveled text. Titles in this series include Asian Giant Hornets, Fire Ants, Killer Bees, Kissing Bugs, Mosquitoes, and Tsetse Flies. This series is also available in Spanish!

Readers will learn all sorts of facts about bugs in this series! They’ll start off by getting a brief introduction to the bug and then move into learning about its size and features. A labeled infographic calls out key parts of the bug on a full-page spread so readers are really getting up-close to learn about them.

Next, we find out where they live with a map that shows where in the world the bug can be found. Readers also get a quick overview of what the bug eats. And then we move into another full-page spread to learn about the bug’s life cycle. From egg to adult, the different stages of the bug’s life are shown with labeled images that are great for visual literacy practice.

This is definitely a series that will make you squirm, but your bug fanatics will love it!

Readers, make sure to check out this slideshow below featuring spreads from this series!

Q: Your new Rebel Girl series is far from spooky, but definitely fits into the totally awesome category - so we’d love to learn more about this! What can you tell us about this new series, and why is it important for all readers?

A: We are very excited to have Rebel Girls on our list this season in an exclusive library-bound format! Each book features 25 stories of women and girls who have dazzled the world with their leadership skills, athleticism, love for the environment, and success in business. These mini biographies are paired with portraits created by female and nonbinary artists from all around the world.

This series is important for all readers because it inspires and empowers them to dream big by sharing real-life stories of other extraordinary women. Rebel Girls gives readers the opportunity to see people like them doing extraordinary things and will hopefully encourage them to follow their dream.

Q: What is one of your and BRB’s favorite ways to celebrate Halloween (or fall)?

A: One of our favorite ways to celebrate Halloween is to reminisce on all the spooky books we’ve published over the years. Be sure to check out our spooky titles because there’s something for everyone! And indulge in a piece of candy or two. (:

Q: BONUS QUESTION: What’s your favorite Halloween Candy? And what candy pairs the best with all of the spooky titles at Black Rabbit Books?

A: Well, I’m a sucker for just about anything chocolate, but my favorite would probably have to be Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Yum! What candy pairs the best with Black Rabbit’s spooky titles? I think some gummy eyeballs or something like that would be a great treat to enjoy while reading books from Black Rabbit!

Thanks again for joining us, Ali! It was a BLAST talking books with you and having Black Rabbit Books back for another spooky season.
