Q: Hi, Deb. Thanks for coming back to #SeasonsOfKidLit and celebrating your newest book: Bing Bang Pling - a perfect read for DIY Day! Readers, ICYMI, Deb joined us during our ThanksAndGiving even last year. Click here to see her interview.
Your new book, Bing Bang Pling seriously looks adorable. Can you share more about your book with everyone?
A: Thanks so much for the enthusiasm for BING BANG PLING, Heather and for featuring it! I wrote this picture book many years ago, when my son was really young. The inspiration came from watching him follow my husband and I around wanting to help fix up our old house. Any project that involved tools—he was wanting to lend a hand.
In the book, the main character helps her mom and dad build a backyard swing set. It is written in short rhymes that will make a great read aloud because it also includes plenty of tool sounds! Most of the tools featured for building the playset are shown in the back of the book.
Q: What do you think readers will love about your book? And how is it the perfect addition to any home or school library?
A: Readers who enjoy Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects and the satisfaction that comes from completing a job well done, will especially enjoy BING BANG PLING. Teachers introducing students to hands-on projects will also appreciate it and librarians will want a copy for the youngest future builders.
Q: The illustrations are absolutely adorable! Candice does an amazing job. I also love how the main character is a girl. What do you love most about Candice's art?
A: I agree, Candice Hartsough’s illustrations are so adorable! Her use of color enhances the playful tone of the text. The main character is a girl! The idea came from the fact that I was one of four daughters to a DIY dad. We were always assisting and learning along the way. I wanted to speak to interested girls who are like I was but also those who may need to build confidence to get involved.
Q: Can you share some of your favorite spreads with us?
A: My favorite spreads are the ones that feature the orange cat. I included illustration notes that recommended an orange cat on most spreads following along with the activity. I have an orange cat, Lumpy. He has always been curious about any DIY projects. He seems to show up whenever we’re working on anything. We call him “The Supervisor.” I think most cat owners will relate!
Readers, check out these colorful and lively spreads!

Great idea for a young picture book! This would be a great pairing with Someone Builds the Dream (by me) and Digger, Dozer, Dumper by Hope Vestergaard.

Bing, Bang Pling sounds wonderful, congratulations!
DEB: I LOVE this interactive book, especially with all the FUN sounds--which will make it a HIT with ALL kids and a LIVELY read aloud! And I ESPECIALLY LOVE that the main character is a DIY-LOVIN' little GAL! It's SO IMPORTANT to teach kids as young as possible that they can do ANYTHING. It's also SO IMPORTANT to help kids not to pigeonhole. Learning this early on is KEY! THANK YOU! HAPPY DIY DAY!!!
I love the confidence building through a DIY project in this book! Sounds like a fun read aloud too. I follow Deb on Twitter, and RT her post. Thanks for sharing!
